Suspected Road Rage Leads to Stabbing in Sunnyvale

&

The Sunnyvale Department of Public Safety (DPS) is still investigating after an apparent road rage incident ended with two people stabbed. It happened on Friday afternoon, March 15, around 3:25 p.m. near the intersection of Lawrence Expressway and Arques Avenue in Sunnyvale.

Witnesses called DPS to say that several men were fighting in the intersection. When officers arrived at the scene, they found two men with stab wounds.

Because all Sunnyvale officers receive 18 weeks of fire academy training and 8 weeks of EMT academy training in addition to their 26 weeks of police academy training, they are able to administer first aid at the scene of most incidents. At this incident, officers were able to provide medical aid to the men until they could be transported to a local hospital for treatment. Both men are expected to survive.

One man, Luis Alavarez, was arrested at the scene. He was taken into custody by officers. Another man, Oscar Urbizo, fled before officers arrived at the intersection. He was later tracked down in Redwood City and arrested without incident. Both men face several charges, including assault with a deadly weapon. They were both booked into the Santa Clara County Jail.

Investigators believe this started out as “road rage,” though they have not released any additional details at this time. The case is still under investigation. Sunnyvale DPS investigators ask that if you have any information about this incident, please contact Detective G. Limon at (408) 730-7110.

Sunnyvale DPS emphasizes that there is not an ongoing threat to the community. All of the suspects in this incident are in police custody and face charges.
