Sunnyvale School District Begins Search for New Superintendent

The Sunnyvale School District Board has begun the process of hiring a new superintendent and wants the public to be a part of the search. At a special public meeting on Tuesday, March 4, the Board set a timeline for the process, with a target of having a new superintendent in place by July 1.

The Board also announced a series of public input opportunities, including an anonymous online survey on the qualities the Board should seek in a new superintendent.

The survey is one way to gather input from families, SSD staff and community members on choosing the district’s new leader. The survey is brief and is available online in English and in Spanish:

“We want to hear from our community as we search for our next superintendent,” said Bridget Watson, Sunnyvale School District Board President. “We are committed to building upon our strong foundation of community collaboration, sound financial stewardship, and unwavering support for every student. We encourage all of our educational partners to actively participate in the upcoming weeks, ensuring that the next leader of our district truly reflects the values and aspirations of our community.”

Dr. Michael Gallagher, the superintendent since 2020, has announced that he will retire on June 30.

The School Board adopted the following timeline for the search process:

  • March: Board meets with consultants and determines characteristics, skills, and qualities desired in a new superintendent. Consultants meet with staff and community to receive input. Online survey is posted to the district website. Consultants post recruitment materials and identify candidates.
  • April: Deadline for application. Consultants complete comprehensive reference and background checks on applicants. Board meets with consultants, reviews all applications and selects finalists.
  • April-May: Board interviews finalists. Board completes a validation visit of the leading candidate’s community and makes the final decision.
  • June: Board approves superintendent contract at a regularly scheduled meeting.
  • July 1: Anticipated start date of the new superintendent.
