Sunnyvale police have arrested a man who allegedly broke into the department headquarters.
At roughly 2:30 p.m. Sunday, Ryan O’Reilly, 33, of Sunnyvale, stands accused of smashing the sliding glass doors of the Sunnyvale Police Department office, 700 All American Way.
According to a release from Sunnyvale police, “furious” the building was closed. Investigators say O’Reilly walked over to the flower arrangements left on the Fallen Officer’s Memorial and removed them and tossed them into the parking lot. Then, O’Reilly — “in a fit of rage” — took a nearby rock and hurled it through the door to gain entrance.
A records clerk was in the building and, after hearing the glass shatter, peaked out to see O’Reilly in the lobby before retreating to safety and calling police. Before fleeing, O’Reilly allegedly threw the same rock through another glass door.
Police arrested O’Reilly a short distance from the scene.
Capt. Dzahn Le, with Sunnyvale police, said the investigation is ongoing and investigators do not have a motive for the crime. O’Reilly is charged with burglary, vandalism and resisting arrest.
While police do not have an exact estimate of the damage caused during the break-in, Le said it exceeds $400, making the charges a felony.
No one was injured.
Sunnyvale DPS says the front lobby doors are boarded up as the agency waits to have them repaired, but the offices are still open and available for in-person services.
If the DPS building is locked and you need to speak to someone, please use the “red phone” near the front lobby door. It will go directly to someone in the Records office who can help you with any issues.
