Santa Clara City Council Has Light September

It appears as if the year is beginning to wind down for members of Santa Clara’s City Council, as most Council Members recorded few non-public meetings and events. Still, there were a few notable finds. Here’s how Council spent September.

Mayor Lisa Gillmor

Early in September (Sept. 6), Gillmor met with Congressman Ro Khanna to discuss Santa Clara housing and traffic issues. On Sept. 12, she met with local business owner Kawser Jamal regarding small business. One day later, she met with Triton Museum of Art Deputy Director Preston Metcalf about the State of the Arts event held at the Triton earlier this month.

Gillmor’s next non-public meeting or event of note was Sept. 20 when she and resident Donald Murphy talked about the Neighborhood Conservation and Improvement Program. Later that day, she had an introductory meeting with the new president of Santa Clara University, Father Kevin O’Brien, and toured Pruneridge Golf Course’s new restaurant. Three days later she met with Ohlone College Board of Trustees Vice Chair Teresa Cox regarding Archbishop Mitty community initiatives and, that same day, she recorded her final meeting with Susan E. Brown, Director of Special Projects at The Willie L. Brown Jr. Institute and Papia Gambelin of Platinum Advisors regarding building wrapping.

Kathy Watanabe, District 1

Watanabe didn’t record her first non-public meeting or event until Sept. 13 when she met with resident Helen Chapman regarding airport noise. On Sept. 16 she had a meeting with Santa Clara Fire Department representatives about the Better Together program followed by a meeting with Lou Pellegrini and Yvette Sessions of Mission Trails regarding waste and recycling. Her September ended with a meeting on the 23rd with North San Jose resident Robin Roemer about ending Charcot Avenue and a meeting on the 30th with attorneys Huy Tran and Ruth Silver-Taube regarding a wage theft ordinance.

Raj Chahal, District 2

Chahal and Council Member Karen Hardy took a tour of Levi’s Stadium with Rahul Chandhok, 49ers Vice President of Public Affairs and Strategic Communications on Sept. 6. He also had a meeting with Santa Clara Police Officers Association President Alex Torke about the upcoming police chief election on Sept. 13 and three days later he met with Pellegrini and Sessions about garbage and recycling.

Karen Hardy, District 3

Hardy’s only meeting of note was the stadium tour she took with Chahal on Sept. 6

Teresa O’Neill, District 4

O’Neill’s only notable meeting was on Sept. 6 with Alex Shoor of Catalyze SV about “governance approaches.”

Vice Mayor Patricia Mahan, District 5

Mahan had only three calendar items in September, two public meetings and one public event — attending the Parade of Champions on Sept. 28.

Debi Davis, District 6

Davis only recorded public meetings and events in September.
