Power To Your Voice

Milestones – Return to Sanity – Opinion

The vote is in and the four years of retail “free theft” has ended. Voters didn’t like the idea and if the details hadn’t been buried in a sneaky ballot measure, it wouldn’t have passed in the first place.

This column has covered the crime of approving free crime up to $950 at least a dozen times. It now appears this was, and is, at least one subject where public agreement was unanimous.

Voters also were in agreement with the return of Suds Jain and Kevin Park to City Council. Congratulations in their victory over the slate of Mayor-endorsed candidates. Jain, Park, Raj Chahal and Karen Hardy will be joined by former President of Santa Clara School Board, Albert Gonzalez.

The balance of power will remain in friendly “city first” hands.

This outcome is great for the city and voters paid attention to the terrific work the Santa Clara council majority has done in recent years. Isn’t it amazing what can happen when residents pay attention and vote their knowledge? Congratulations to the winners and to the voters who will remain in the “win” column.

And, speaking of winning, the 49ers turned in a great win on Sunday against Tampa Bay. This win keeps them in contention for the Big Game.

Why do I tout the 49ers win? Simple: because they are business partners with the city of Santa Clara. After 10 years of this arrangement, Mayor Gillmor still doesn’t accept it. Residents should be thrilled with the millions the 49ers bring to our community and the millions they invest here. In addition, they have put Santa Clara on the national map.

While the 49ers retain the franchise name of San Francisco, Santa Clara is the actual beneficiary, receiving millions in benefits. The 49ers like to win and they have willingly shared the pie with the Santa Clara community.
