As a member of Saratoga High School’s debate team (public forum), I recently did research about some of the economic problems facing our nation. During my research, I came across an article on food insecurity from Santa Clara University. I was surprised by just how many families in Santa Clara County live below the poverty line and the high cost of food. The article mentioned the Second Harvest Food Bank and that most of its clients were children and seniors. Like Gavin Newsom calling the number of homeless in California a disgrace, so is food insecurity. It suddenly dawned on me that my school’s annual food drive should occur much more frequently and I urge everyone who can to donate items or volunteer at the Second Harvest Food Bank, Silicon Valley’s helpline for hungry community members.
