I’ve been studying the issue of redistricting in Santa Clara. I read the articles about it in the San Jose and Santa Clara papers. I deduce that the rot of identity politics is dividing Santa Clara voters. The catalyst for this is the Asian Law Alliance. It’s using a Big Brother state law to sue the city on the excuse that no one of their Asian identity group has been elected to our council. I have lived in Santa Clara 35 years and vote every election. If there is an Asian candidate who campaigns, is qualified, and convinces voters, that person will get elected. I have voted for such candidates who have campaigned for city government. If every voter in Santa Clara who’s Asian voted for the Asian candidate, would they be enough to win? Voting on ethnicity seems a poor way to get good government.
