Letter from Kathy Watanabe

A recent editorial included an unfair statement about some candidates’ potential involvement with the Police Department. What was not said about these three candidates is this: Debi Davis, a businesswoman, is a professional event planner and President of Sister Cities. Jerry Marsalli, a retired officer, owns a Santa Clara business and serves on the non-profit Mission City Community Fund. Roseann Lacoursiere owned a long-time business in Santa Clara and works as a volunteer for PAL. In business, profession, and community work, these candidates have served Santa Clara for a long time.

Santa Clara is a national leader in incorporating ethics into local government. Candidates are informed about the importance of ethical campaigning. If, as councilmembers, they have a conflict of interest, they will certainly recuse themselves from the decision. What we should know about these three Santa Clarans is that their hard work in business and community makes them strong, knowledgeable candidates for City Council.
