Free Speech on Campus Article
It was refreshing to see David Alexander’s article on campus free speech. FIRE (Foundation for Individual Rights in Education) does a great job rating schools for freedom of speech. We used to think of a campus as a cauldron of conflicting ideas bubbling over for students to discuss, dissect and chose. Now, in order to be heard, your ideas have to comply with whatever thought doctrine the administration accepts. In rare cases, like the local example, it can seem conservative, more often it is liberal; in all cases it is wrong. If a school has an area designated as a ‘free speech zone’ that means it doesn’t have free speech. A student should not have to make an appt and get approval to speak out on campus. Thanks for letting people know what is happening on campuses.
