4th of July Fireworks – Letter to the Editor

Frankly, I’m baffled by the fact that fireworks displays remain popular despite the safety risks they pose to the environment, people, and animals. The risks greatly outweigh the thrill of watching a few short minutes of flashing lights and listening to huge booms.

Is it really worth it? Is it worth the noise and air pollution? It is worth it for war veterans who are struggling with PTSD, or small children who have no knowledge of history? We need to consider wildlife and pets that panic and flee – and even meet their deaths – trying to avoid fireworks.

There are alternative ways to celebrate the 4th of July, such as glow sticks and flashing lights, Disneyland-type light shows accompanied by music, or holographic technology. These would eliminate the safety risks but keep the fun on America’s independence day. I say we move quickly to such alternatives.
