Wilcox’s Tyson Bonilla Named 49ers Prep Player of the Week

Wilcox quarterback Tyson Bonilla earned Player of the Week honors from the 49ers Prep on Oct. 19, partly for his play against Mountain View on Sept. 29.

“In the world of sports, there are athletes who are known for their exceptional talent, dedication and ability to make a significant impact on their team’s success,” wrote the 49ers in its press release. “Tyson Bonilla, senior quarterback for Wilcox High School, has certainly earned his spot in the spotlight as our Player of the Week. With his outstanding performances on the field and unwavering commitment to his team, Bonilla has captured the hearts of the Santa Clara community.”

Bonilla helped lead the Chargers to a 45-14 victory over Mountain View. He finished the evening with 288 total yards and four rushing touchdowns.

“His ability to read the defense and create scoring opportunities has made him a force to be reckoned with on the field,” wrote 49ers Prep.

Bonilla began boxing at six and started playing soccer when he was seven. He joined his first football team at eight years old. He started out as a running back and safety and did not transition to quarterback until his senior year of high school. He told 49ers Prep it wasn’t easy, especially because he played defensive back his junior year.

“The change has been rough mentally since I have to know everyone’s position including mine,” Bonilla told 49ers Prep.

Bonilla spent this last summer improving his game. He reviewed the playbook and spent a lot of time with Wilcox’s coaches, getting a lot of reps. Over the past few months, he has been able to hone his skills in the new position.

The game against Mountain View was not Bonilla’s only highlight. He threw two touchdowns against rival Menlo-Atherton, helping to lead the Chargers to a 41-3 win on Oct. 6.

As the school of this week’s recipient of the 49ers PREP High School Player of the Week presented by U.S. Bank, Wilcox High School will receive a grant from the 49ers Foundation to put towards its football program.
