Wilcox Chargers Power Past Aragon; Improve to 3-0

The Wilcox Chargers made it look easy for the second week in a row on Friday night. Wilcox controlled the football game from the get-go against the Aragon Dons.

After an Aragon three and out started the game, the Chargers promptly took over, needing just two plays to score. A 20-yard run by Paul Rosa preceded a 10-yard touchdown run by Gabe Herrera. Both runners were hardly even touched. Wilcox would go on to score the game’s first 20 points en route to an eventually 55-14 victory.

The win marks the second-straight blowout for Wilcox on the heels of week one’s thrilling 10-6 upset over Valley Christian. Last week the Chargers cruised past San Benito 37-6.

“It was just our linemen moving everybody off the ball, doing their jobs,” said Herrera, who finished with two touchdowns and 150 yards rushing against the Dons. “It’s always the linemen. We owe them all the touchdowns. They did their job this week and made it easy for us running backs.”

Rosa meanwhile went for over 250 yards with three touchdowns — Aragon had no answers for the Chargers’ rushing attack.

“He’s running hard. He was doing great all week in practice,” added Herrera on his running mate in the backfield. “He deserves everything he gets, scoring all those touchdowns. I’m proud of him. Being a senior and watching him develop as a junior, it’s great to see.”

Even though the score was lopsided and the game was essentially decided at halftime, the Chargers players were still rooting on their reserve players with tons of emotion. Late in the game, newcomer Issa Diallo scored a long touchdown run and the entire Chargers sideline went sprinting down towards the end zone to celebrate.

“These guys are tight,” remarked Chargers Head Coach Paul Rosa on his team’s camaraderie. “That’s a big reason why we have been successful so far. They are a close-knit group and they pull for each other whether they are playing or not. And [Diallo] is a kid who is brand new — he is a transfer from Leigh. He’s a soccer player from Africa, only been here a few years, still new to the sport, but you can tell he can run a little bit.”

Ryan Cooper Jr. and Isaiah Flores would also add touchdowns for the Chargers. Cooper ran underneath an easy catch in the corner of the end zone on a ball lofted for him in one-on-one coverage and Flores took a misdirection, tight-end handoff for a 72-yard touchdown run.

Wilcox will take on rival school Santa Clara on Sept. 14. The following week they will open their league schedule against Fremont on Sept. 21, but their next big test won’t be until Sept. 28th when they take on Palo Alto — the Palo Alto Vikings are also undefeated at 3-0 and ranked just behind the Chargers in the state rankings.
