The Firehouse Run Raises Thousands

It was a clear and sunny morning, but that only helped reinforce the fact it was cold.

With temperatures hovering in the low 40s, the weather wasn’t quite what you imagine when you think of going for a morning run in lightweight athletic gear. But nearly 800 people thought the morning brought the promise of fun, competition and a chance to help raise money to help some worthy causes.

These people came together for the fourth year of the Firehouse Run, which took place on Sunday, Dec. 2 at Santa Clara University. The runners greeted the morning chill ready to take part in a 5K family walk or run or a 10K run.

After the 5K and 10K events were completed, there was a Junior Firefighters Race featuring hundreds of children 12 years of age and younger who sprinted from the start line to cross the finish line with probably even more excitement than the 5K and 10K participants.

With a goal of having a fun event by bringing families together, first time racers, elite runners and everything in between, and a larger goal of helping enhance education of Santa Clara students and supporting military veterans, the Firehouse Run succeeded.

The Firehouse Run supports schools in the Santa Clara Unified School District and local military veteran groups. They partnered with the Santa Clara Schools Foundation, Homeless Veterans Rehabilitation Program and the United Veterans Council of Santa Clara County. As of Dec. 3, they raised almost $4,000.
