The Dish: Viva La Paloma!

Situated on the corner of El Camino Real and Los Padres Boulevard in Santa Clara is a nostalgic building with a distinctive clay tile roof. For more than three decades, it has been home to La Paloma Restaurante, a down-home style Mexican restaurant. Run by third-generation restaurateurs, La Paloma features an exciting mix of new and traditional Mexican fare to entice customers back.

The colorful, authentic atmosphere is warm and inviting and the traditional wall hangings tell a story all their own. When you sit down, you are welcomed with a smile, a hot basket of chips and a bowl of homemade Salsa Mexicana casera.

The Camarones al Cilantro is an amazing mix of meaty shrimp sautÈed in olive oil and jalapeno-lime butter with slices of white onions, garlic and lots of cilantro. A pile of Frijoles Rancheros (spicy whole pinto beans with cheese and peppers) and Spanish rice encompasses the large plate, which is topped off with a side of guacamole and corn salad to finish out the garnish.

The Enchiladas Trio includes a Chicken Enchilada Suiza, a Cheese Enchilada Verde and a Red Enchilada de Chile Colorado. All three are delicious and unique. And as with all great Mexican dishes, the large plate is overflowing with Spanish rice and refried beans.

Not to be outdone by the amazing entrÈes and sides, the desserts are noteworthy all on their own. The Deep Fried Ice Cream looks amazing served in a large blue-rimmed martini glass, but we all know that looks aren’t everything. Inside the glass is one large scoop of ice cream, encased in a hardened nutty, deep-fried crust. It is then drenched in honey and encircled by a cloud of whipped cream. It is like ‘un cielito lindo,’ or a beautiful little bit of heaven.

If you decide to visit La Paloma on a Friday or Saturday night, you may have the privilege of being serenaded by the swooning voice and deft fingers of Francisco Ramirez, a local singer and acoustic guitarist. Cheers to La Paloma for introducing $2.00 taco and enchilada nights due to the current economic climate.
