Superintendent Steve Stavis Retires

Santa Clara Unified School District (SCUSD) Superintendent, Steve Stavis, will be retiring from the district on Thursday, June 30.  At the school board meeting held last Thursday, June 23, the Administrative Staff recognized Stavis for his work with the district and presented him with a certificate of appreciation and a Happy Retirement cake.

Stavis first joined the SCUSD in 1991 as the Principal for Bowers Elementary School, replacing Bob Feliciano.  Two years later, in 1993, Stavis was promoted to serve as the Principal of Cabrillo Middle School.  He remained with Cabrillo until 2004 after being recruited by then Superintendent, Rod Adams, to be the Assistant Superintendent of Human Resources.

Steve became the Superintendent of the SCUSD on March 13, 2008 when the board announced his appointment to replace retiring Superintendent, Rod Adams.

In talking with Stavis, it’s obvious he has a true love and affinity for the District and the people around him.  This gave him what many feel is a unique approach that enabled him to be as successful, and popular among students, faculty and staff as he was during his career as a teacher, principal, Assistant Superintendent, and finally as the Superintendent.  It’s not often that a tear is shed at the retirement for a co-worker, but last Thursday, June 23, and this Thursday, June 30, many tears were and will be shed.  Stavis’ journey in the SCUSD has been a remarkable one and he will be missed.
