In December, a fire broke out at the city’s previous animal control service provider, the Humane Society of Silicon Valley in Milpitas.
That fire left the Human Society unable to shelter animals and forced Sunnyvale to contract with Santa Clara County Animal Services Center in San Martin.
The county shelter is located at 90 Highland Ave., at the corner of Monterey Road and Highland, in the unincorporated area of Santa Clara County.
Jennifer Garnett, the public information officer for Sunnyvale, wrote in an email that the San Martin shelter was the closest one that offered the capacity and services the city needs.
The city is still wrapping up a one-year agreement with the county for sheltering abandoned, impounded or lost domestic animals.
“We continue to recommend checking all local animal shelters if you lose a pet,” Garnett wrote. “Each shelter typically recommends that people check with their local jurisdiction and other shelters.”
Sunnyvale’s animal control web page links to the shelter’s website, which has a lost and found tab with pictures of the animals being held.
Since Sunnyvale does not have short-term holding, animal control officers who find a lost pet will take the animal to the shelter the same day. If the animal is not claimed in three days, the shelter will make the animal available for adoption.
Although the contract is not final, the city estimates it will cost taxpayers $477,320, which, Garnett wrote, is within the city’s budget for such services.
