Sunnyvale is trying to be more inclusive. To do so, city officials are aiming to leverage Sunnyvale’s Magical Bridge playground by hosting a series of free classes.
Increased funding for equity and inclusion programs has allowed city employees to ramp up the amount of free activities it is offering. The city is already offering storytime in the playhouse at Fair Oaks Park, 540 N. Fair Oaks Ave. Last month, it also began offering free watercolor classes for disabled people.
Angela Chan, the city’s youth and family resources manager, said the program has been well-received and will continue in the upcoming months.
“We like to kind of do more to serve individuals with disabilities,” Chan said. “We try to look at our programming and services through that lens.”
In addition to storytime and the watercolor classes, Chan said the city intends to expand its programming. Adding activities that incorporate adaptive movement or dance and perhaps a sensory storytime would be ideal, Chan said.
Toward that end, the city is seeking instructors for such activities.
The watercolor classes are open to those with disabilities eight and older. Registration, which opens 10 days prior to the class, is required. Each class has a maximum of five attendees. Participants must be independent with self-care or able to bring an attendant.
December classes will be held Tuesdays from 3:30 to 4:30 p.m. Dec. 3, 10 and 17. Subsequent classes in January and February will be held Thursdays from 4:30 to 5:30 p.m. January 9, 16, 23 and 30 and Feb. 6, 13, 20 and 27.
