Sunnyvale detectives have arrested a man in connection to a kidnapping and rape committed in 2009.
According to the Sunnyvale Department of Public Safety (DPS), detectives located and arrested Davis Bryan Vest shortly before midnight on March 18, 2025.
DPS reports that it recently renewed the investigation into the unsolved 2009 assault case. That investigation identified Vest. Detectives submitted their findings to the Santa Clara County District Attorney’s office, which reviewed the evidence and issued an arrest warrant for Vest.
Vest is accused of kidnapping to commit a sexual offense and rape by force, violence, duress, menace or fear.
Investigators have connected Vest to at least two rapes in Sunnyvale with two separate victims. One happened in 2007 and the other in 2009.
Sunnyvale DPS is asking that anyone with information or knowledge of Vest committing additional assault contact Sunnyvale DPS Detective Hutchison at (408) 730-7110.
Recent Cold Cases Solved
This is the latest in a string of cold cases Sunnyvale DPS has solved in the past year. Last month, Gary Gene Ramirez pled “no contest” to first-degree murder charges. Ramirez killed a 15-year-old girl near a Sunnyvale bus stop in 1982.
DPS detectives also worked with other local agencies to arrest two men in connection with a 2017 murder outside Club La Ronda on Duane Avenue. Investigators arrested Vicente Aguilera-Chavez and Agustin Sandoval in January of this year and charged them with murder.
In November of last year, DPS closed a more than 40-year-old cold case. Thanks to the retesting of blood evidence found at the scene, DPS was able to connect Samuel Silva to the death of a security guard at a business on De Guigne Drive in 1979.
Silva died in 2008.
The Santa Clara County District Attorney’s office says that advancements in DNA testing technology, a 2021 federal grant and a devoted full-time investigator have all helped solve local cold case investigations.
