The Sunnyvale City Council has appointed Tim Kirby as the interim City Manager. Kirby will take over for current City Manager Kent Steffens, who will retire on June 29.
Kirby is currently the City’s Director of Finance. He has agreed to serve as the interim City Manager while Sunnyvale conducts a nationwide search to identify Steffens’ replacement.
“Sunnyvale is fortunate to have exceptional employees like Tim Kirby who’ve provided excellent service for many years,” said Mayor Larry Klein. “We are so pleased he expressed interest in serving as interim City Manager to provide a smooth transition and a steady hand. Tim has a deep understanding of the City’s operations and I’m confident he’ll maintain our strong financial track record and continue our leadership in Silicon Valley.”
“I’m truly honored the City Council entrusted me to guide the City during this transition,” stated Kirby. “I’m looking forward to continuing my service to the Council, Sunnyvale’s residents and businesses, and our City employees. My goal is to advance the Council’s strategic priorities and work with City staff and our community to continue providing high quality services. I’ve spent my entire career with Sunnyvale and am deeply committed to serving in this new capacity.”
Kirby has served Sunnyvale for 29 years, beginning his career with the City in 1995. He became Assistant Director of Finance in 2013 and Director of Finance in 2016. Prior to that, he supported Sunnyvale’s utility services in a variety of roles in both the departments of Finance and Public Works.
As head of the Department of Finance, Kirby oversees all financial operations and ensures regulatory compliance for the City. He has led the development and presentation of the annual City budget and the City’s annual financial statements for the last eleven years.
Kirby is a graduate of San Jose State and holds a Bachelor of Science in Environmental Studies with an emphasis in Integrated Waste Management. He also served as an Early Care and Education Commissioner for the City of San Jose, and volunteers regularly for the California Society of Municipal Finance Officers.
Kirby’s annual Interim City Manager salary will be $383,259. The City expects to open the City Manager recruitment by the end of May.
Steffens is retiring after 13 years with the City of Sunnyvale.

What a bunch of crap...he isn't experienced with running a city he simply a employee who crunches numbers for a living.. I hope they find a replacement soon as sunnyvale has alot of serious issues facing it. These road conditions are getting worse and traffic enforcement for speeders no where to be found.
Sunnyvale has had a lot of mismanagement, maybe he can bring the Art and Wine Festival back in 2025.
