Chargers and Bruins Compete in SCVAL El Camino Division Cross Country Finals
Wilcox senior Jesus Covarrubias placed fourth in the SCVAL El Camino division finals with a time of 16:14.7 on the 2.95-mile course at Crystal Springs in Belmont on Nov. 5. Bruins senior Rick Duenas placed fifth with a time of 16:18.6. Bruins junior Abby Olsen placed tenth in the girls division with a 20:06.8 time.

St. Lawrence Cross Country
The Celtics’ Cross Country teams will run in the CCS Finals Nov. 16 at Crystal Springs in Belmont.  Senior Sabrina Sambuceto will run in the Division V girls race. The boys team, led by senior Devon Gonzalez will also compete.

Wilcox Girls Volleyball Ends Season With Pair of Losses
The Chargers (14-14-1, 7-6) concluded their season with a 3-1 loss at Cupertino (25-12, 9-3) on Nov. 5 followed by a 3-0 loss to Saratoga (18-11, 9-3) on Nov. 7.

Santa Clara Girls Volleyball Concludes Season With Losses
The Bruins (3-22, 1-22) concluded their season with a 3-2 loss to Fremont (3-20-1, 2-10) on Nov. 5 and a 3-1 loss at Milpitas (8-25, 3-9) on Nov. 7.

St. Lawrence Volleyball Loses
The Celtics (11-7, 10-2) began their playoff run by losing to Summit Prep 3-2 (25-17, 18-25, 22-25, 25-21, 10-15) on Nov. 4.

St. Lawrence Soccer Loses
The St. Lawrence boy’s soccer team (8-5-2, 7-2-1) suffered a 3-0 loss to Summit Prep in the PSAL Championship Tournament Semi-Finals on Nov. 5.

The undefeated Pee Wee Panthers team battled the 8-1 Almaden Mustangs in a semi-final showdown at Townsend Field. Trailing 20-8 with 1:30 left in the half, Paul Rosa, Jr. lifted the spirits of the Panthers squad, running for a 60-yard TD, and giving the Panthers a new resurgence. The defense held the Mustangs at bay, and with 20 seconds on the clock, Coach Rosa turned to his bag of tricks with a 20-yard half back pass from Rosa, Jr. to Jacob Dominguez, followed by Rosa, Jr. catching a 15-yard floater from Alex Adame with three seconds left. This gave the Panthers a 22-20 lead at the half. The Panthers claimed the 36-26 win. The Panthers remain undefeated and play the Redwood City 49ers at Andrew Hill High School on Saturday, Nov.16 at 10 a.m. in the championship game.

The Lions competed in a heavyweight battle against the Almaden Mustangs. The Mustangs struck first, leading 8-0 at halftime. A Nathaniel Kelly interception fired up the crowed and his team, though the Lions could not take advantage of the turnover. The Lions would capitalize on another turnover late in the third quarter when the Mustangs fumbled and Santa Clara’s Nacho ran it in for the Lions only score in the loss.

Morgan Hill defeated the Thundercats 24-12 in a rematch from a game earlier in the year when these two teams battled to a tie. Afterwards, Coach Dan Campos explained to the team and parents that, “A football is not round, so sometimes it does not bounce your way.”

Santa Clara hosted the Peninsula Pop Warner Cheer championships on Nov. 9 at the Santa Clara Convention Center. The ladies of the gridiron performed at three levels. Even though the Mitey Catgirls are too young for competition. The girls took the mat, looking sharp and precise. L’Breeyah Jones’ smile lit up the room of cheering fans. The Panthers cheer squad claimed first and will advance to the regionals as the top seed. The team: Kaylyn, Jocelyn, Camilla, Madyson, Danielle, Mia, Cristina, Celeste, Gabrielle, Adriana, Lesslie, Jesalina, Alexa, Terisina, Alyssa and Monik.

The Jr. Midget Wildcats claimed second and will advance to the regionals held Thanksgiving weekend. The team: Abigail, Marijane, Lauren, Jennifer, Madeline, Brianna, Lauren, Melana, Aleyka, Jolene, Renee, Adrianna, Naomi, Mia, Jessica, Veronica, Anndrea and Cameron. Both cheer teams have the opportunity to advance to Florida.

Mission College Women’s Basketball Loses Opener
The Mission College Saints Basketball (0-1) opened their season with an 85-68 loss at Ohlone on Nov. 11. The Saints host the Mission College tournament this weekend.

Mission College Women’s Soccer Loses Twice
Mission College lost 6-2 to Skyline on Nov. 5. Kelly Escolar (75th) and Jordana Coldani (80th, with an assist from Vanessa Garcia) scored the goals for the Saints. Mission then lost 9-0 to Las Positas on Nov. 8. The Saints host Canada on Nov. 15 at 3 p.m.

Mission College Men’s Soccer Wins
Mission beat Skyline 2-0, with goals by Michael Kamara (20th) and Daniel Mendez (35th), on Nov. 5. The Saints host Chabot on Nov. 12 (after press time).

Santa Clara University Men’s Soccer Wins Twice
The Broncos beat Saint Mary’s College 1-0 on Nov. 8 and University of San Francisco 2-1 on Nov. 10. Sophomore Jared Hegardt scored in the 82nd to give Santa Clara the win over Saint Mary’s and seniors Michael Gates and Mark Daus scored in the 16th and 70th minute to give the Broncos the come-from-behind victory over USF. SCU hosts Loyola Marymount on Nov. 15 at 7 p.m.

Santa Clara University Women’s Soccer Loses, Wins
Santa Clara lost 3-1 to University of Portland on Nov. 7, but bounced back to beat Gonzaga 6-3 and take the West Coast Conference title on Nov. 9. Senior Morgan Marloborugh scored the lone goal in the loss. Junior Sofia Huerta scored a hat trick, Marlbrough scored twice and senior Alyson Birgel once in the win. SCU begins its NCAA Tournament run on Nov. 15.

Santa Clara University Men’s Water Polo Wins, Loses
The Broncos beat Air Force 13-7 on Senior Day (Nov. 9) before losing 11-4 to UC Davis on Nov. 10. Santa Clara plays at Cal on Nov. 14.

Santa Clara University Women’s Volleyball Loses, Wins
Santa Clara lost to University of San Diego 3-1 (24-26, 22-25, 25-18, 12-25) on Nov. 7 before beating Brigham Young University 3-1 (27-25, 25-22, 23-25, 25-23) on Nov. 9. Junior Taylor Miltonled the team with 12 kills and 12 digs in the loss.  In the win over No. 21 BYU, Milton again led the team with 15 kills, 16 digs and four aces. SCU plays at Saint Mary’s College on Nov. 14.

Santa Clara University Men’s Basketball Opens Season with Win
The Broncos opened the season with a commanding 84-39 victory over Bethesda University on Nov. 8.  Freshman Jared Brownridge led the team with 25 points, followed by freshman Jalen Richard with 15. As a whole Santa Clara shot 49.1 percent and forced 19 turnovers. Santa Clara hosts San Jose State on Nov. 12 (after press time).

Santa Clara University Women’s Basketball Opens with Loss

Santa Clara opened the season with a heartbreaking 77-70 loss to UNLV. The Broncos shot 43.8 percent from the field and 25 percent from three-point range. Collectively, Santa Clara had 53 rebounds, 22 turnovers, 20 assists, one block and two steals. Individually, the team was led by junior Nici Gilday with 22 points and eight rebounds followed by redshirt senior Ruta Zurauskytewith 10 points. The Broncos host San Jose State on Nov. 12 (after press time).
