Chargers Tackle Seaside
The Chargers (3-0) claimed yet another thrilling overtime win on September 20 at Fitzpatrick Field by topping Seaside (1-2) 27-21 in double overtime.
Seaside took a 7-0 lead in the second quarter and maintained the 7-0 lead at the half, extending their lead to 14-0 midway through the third quarter.

Rallying back, the Chargers finally got onto the scoreboard on a nine-yard TD run by senior Sione Finefeuiaki late in the third. The Chargers knotted the game at 14-14 after a 50-yard TD run by senior QB Kenny Dipko with eight minutes remaining. The Chargers had a chance to win the game in regulation, but a 40-yard field goal attempt hit the cross bars, sending the game into overtime.

Firing first in overtime, the Chargers scored a TD and senior Robert Bowles (3-for-3) connected on the PAT, but Seaside countered, scoring on a passing play, tying the game 21-21.The Chargers took the final 27-21 lead on a 10-yard run by senior Delshawn Mitchell and claimed the win when the Chargers’ defense halted Seaside from scoring.

Mitchell, who fumbled twice in the first half, amassed 180 yards on 14 carries, while Finefeuiaki compiled 145 yards on 10 carries.

Bruins Host Piedmont Hills Friday
Coming off a week, the Bruins (1-1) host Piedmont Hills (1-1) on Friday, Sept. 27 at Bruins Field.

Lions Youth Football Teams All Win
The Santa Clara Lions claimed a 16-6 win over the San Francisco Seahawks in their toughest game of the season this far. The Lions buckled down on defense and did not allow the Seahawks to convert on four fourth down conversion attempts in the second half.

The Panthers prowled with a 22-0 win. The player of the day was Alex Adame, who passed for over 60 yards and rushed for over 75 yards. Onyx Smith led the defense.

The Mitey Cats claimed a decisive 30-0 win behind the leadership of Ethan NoriegaDerek Aguirre scored the first touchdown, while Julian Garcia led the defense.

The Thunder Cats claimed a 24-0 win. Adam Arenas scored with his blistering speed. Logan Davis led the defense. Another team leader was Bryson Bradley, who Head Coach Dan Campos says, “has a way of being there for us in the key times.”

The Wildcats claimed a 22-6 win behind great tackling by Dylan Thiel and Richard Medel. The hit of the day came from Erik KettonGabriel Herrera scored all of the Wildcats’ touchdowns.

Mission College Men’s Soccer Loses
Mission College lost 3-2 to Napa on Sept. 20. Mission’s goals were scored by Joao Oliveira and Pedro Dias. Mission plays Monterey on Sept. 24 after press time.

Mission College’s Women’s Soccer Loses
Mission College lost 4-1 to Ohlone on Sept. 20. Vanessa Garcia scored the lone goal in the 30th minute. Mission plays San Francisco on Sept. 24 after press time.

Santa Clara University Men’s Soccer Wins Twice
The Broncos beat San Jose State University 1-0 on Sept. 19 and UC Irvine 2-1 on Sept. 22. Sophomore James Huffer scored Santa Clara’s lone, game-winning goal in the 84th minute. Two goals by freshman Edson Cardona (42’, 88’) gave the Broncos the win against UCI. SCU plays at Cal Sept. 27.

Santa Clara University Women’s Soccer Ties, Loses
Santa Clara tied Cal on Sept. 19 in a double overtime match that saw a goal from senior Sarah Jackson in the 76th minute. SCU then lost 3-2 to Stanford on Sept. 22. Senior Julie Johnston (17’) and junior Sofia Huerta (83’) scored goals in the double overtime loss. The Broncos host Kansas on Sept. 27 at 7 p.m.

Santa Clara University Volleyball Wins, Loses
SCU beat Pepperdine 3-1 (25-21, 27-29, 25-23, and 25-23) behind the 18 kills of senior Megan Anders on Sept. 19. Freshman Nikki Hess had 15 kills and 15 digs, junior Taylor Milton had 12 kills and 10 digs and freshman Sabrina Clayton had 10 kills, six digs, a solo block and four block assists in the win. Santa Clara then lost 3-2 (23-25, 26-24, 25-22, 20-25, 6-15) to Loyola Marymount University on Sept. 21. Santa Clara hosts University of San Francisco on Sept. 26 at 6 p.m.

Santa Clara University Men’s Water Polo Loses Twice, Wins Twice
SCU lost 21-9 to University of the Pacific and 9-8 to UC Davis on Sept. 21. The team then beat UC San Diego 11-10 in sudden death overtime and Diablo Valley College 13-12 on Sept. 22. In the loss to UOP, redshirt junior David Guibord led the team with two goals. Redshirt senior Patrick Weiss, redshirt senior Theo Nasser, sophomores Evan Chang and Chase Schaaf and redshirt freshmen Leland Wall, Michael Franco, and Will Grant each scored one in the loss. Freshman Graham McClone scored three times in the loss to UC Davis. Nasser scored twice and senior Tucker Carlson and redshirt freshman Matt Godar scored once in the loss. Weiss scored the “golden goal,” and two additional goals, to give SCU the win over UCSD. The game also saw three goals from redshirt senior Jimmy Moore, two from Carlson, and one each from Nasser, Godar, McClone and sophomore James Rude. In the win over DVC, redshirt junior Kyle Nadel, McClone and Carlson each scored three, while Moore scored twice and Rude and Nasser once.

Santa Clara University Women’s Golf Wins
SCU shot an 875 (291-287-297 +11) to claim first place at the Boise State Bronco Fall Invitational Sept. 16-17. Individually, junior Kaci McCartan shot a one-under-par 215 (71-69-75) to finish in the top spot.
