Annual Santa Clara P.A.L. Golf Tournament a Huge Success
The 36th annual Police Activities League golf tournament was held the Santa Clara Golf & Tennis Club on August 16. Teams of golfers played a shotgun start beginning simultaneously at different holes. Among those who participated were Santa Clara Police Chief Michael J. Sellers, retired Santa Clara Police Captain Stewart Cusimano, retired Police Captain Tom Clark, Deputy Fire Chief Augie Wiedemann, Stevens Creek Lexus Finance Manager Eddie Hsieh, PAL board member Earl Marowelli and several community members.
Santa Clara Native Carlos Herandez Notches Victory for AAA Sacramento
Santa Clara Native Carlos Herandez, a left-handed pitcher for the Oakland Atheltics’ farm system, recorded his first win for the Sacramento Rivercats on August 25. Hernandez (1-2) pitched six innings – striking out four and walking one, allowing nine hits and two earned runs. The Rivercats are the Athletics’ Triple-A affiliate. Hernandez was selected by the Oakland Athletics in the 35th round (1,058th overall) in the 2006 First-Year Player Draft out of Santa Clara High School. Hernandez was a three-time World Champion representing Santa Clara Pony – pitching for the 2004 and 2005 Palomino World Series-winning Santa Clara Red Sox teams
Santa Clara University Women’s Soccer Opens Season
The SCU Women’s soccer team opened its season with a 2-0 loss to the No. 1 North Carolina Tar Heels on Aug. 23. The Broncos followed the loss with a 4-0 loss to Virginia at the University of Virginia Tournament on Aug. 25. SCU hosts Long Beach State on Aug. 29 at 7 p.m.
