Bruins Lose Big to Wildcats
The Santa Clara Bruins lost 42-0 to former head coach Mark Krail on Oct. 4. The Wildcats jumped to an early lead, amassing 35 points in the first quarter alone. Santa Clara recovered, holding the team to zero points in the second, seven points in the third, and zero points in the fourth, but the damage had been done. The Bruins’ offense was led by senior quarterback Antonio Nazario who completed 12 passes for 50 yards, junior Alexander Rios who picked up 36 yards on 17 carries, and sophomore Shaundre Smith, who gained 33 yards on seven receptions. SCHS falls to 1-3 and plays at Mountain View (1-3) on Oct. 11.
Chargers Suffer Heartbreak Against Milpitas
Senior Delshawn Mitchell rushed for Wilcox’s first touchdown in the first. The Trojans answered with a score in the second. Halfway through the third quarter, senior Sione Finefeuiaki ran four yards for a touchdown and the PAT by senior Robert Bowles was good. Milpitas answered late in the third to tie the game. With about nine minutes to go in the fourth, Mitchell broke free for a 40-yard rushing TD to give Wilcox a 20-13 lead. Milpitas responded with a touchdown late in the game. With under a minute left, the Trojans pounded the ball into the end zone, giving them the 27-20 lead and eventual win. The Chargers (3-1) play at Palo Alto (2-2) on Oct. 11.
Lions Lose, Wildcats Los, Panthers Win, Thunder Cats Tie, Mitey Cats Win, Cheer Competes
The Lions battled Oakland’s East Bay Warriors, but lost 6-20. “It was the best game the team has played this year,” said Lions’ Coach Price. The Lions lone score came in the third quarter.
The Wildcats lost 20-28 to the Morgan Hill Raiders. Gabriel Herrera stopped an opening kickoff score by chasing down a Raiders player. The teams traded scores throughout the game, but the Raiders took the lead with two minutes left in the game and the Wildcats were unable to answer.
The Panthers beat the Raiders 28-0. Paul Rosa, Jr. and Onyx Smith led the ground attack, with each scoring a touchdown. Quarterback Alex Adame found receivers Jacob Dominguez and Adam Fox in the air for six points each and defenders Smith and Orosco kept the Raiders from scoring.
The Thunder Cats battled to a 14-14 tie against the Riders and the Mitey Cats beat the Raiders 24-12.
The cheer teams took to the mat at Shoreline Amphitheatre in Mountain View for the first competition of the year. Panther Cheer came in second place and the Mitey Cat and Wildcat cheer teams performed well.
Mission College Men’s Soccer Ties
Mission College tied 2-2 to Monterey on Oct. 4. The Saints play at Ohlone on Oct. 11 at 1:30 p.m.
Mission College Women’s Soccer Loses
The Saints lost 5-0 to Las Positas Oct. 4. Mission College plays at De Anza Oct. 15 at 4 p.m.
Santa Clara University Men’s Soccer Wins, Loses
SCU beat University of San Diego 1-0 in overtime on Oct. 4 before losing 4-0 to Loyola Marymount University on Oct. 6. Senior Carlos Montes scored the winning goal for the Broncos in the 94th minute. Santa Clara hosts University of San Francisco on Oct. 11.
Santa Clara University Men’s Water Polo Loses
Santa Clara lost 20-5 to Stanford on Oct. 5. Junior Mark Davis got the Broncos on the board early, but Stanford battled back and won. Davis scored again, and redshirt senior Jimmy Moore, freshman Graham McClone and redshirt junior Matt Kochalko all had goals in the loss. SCU plays at the SoCal Tournament in Irvine, Calif. Oct. 12-13.
Santa Clara University Women’s Volleyball Wins, Loses
The Broncos beat University of Portland 3-1 (23-25, 25-19, 25-17, 25-23) on Oct. 3 before losing 3-1 (21-25, 20-25, 25-19, 23-25) to Gonzaga University on Oct. 5. In the win over Portland, freshman Sabrina Clayton had 14 kills, junior Taylor Milton had 12 and freshman Nikki Hess 11. Senior Alyssa Anderson had 52 assists and 10 digs. In the loss to Gonzaga, Clayton led Santa Clara with 16 kills, Hess with 12 kills and 13 digs and senior Haley Cameron with 11 kills. SCU plays at Brigham Young University on Oct. 10.
Santa Clara University Men’s Tennis Reaches Semifinals
SCU played in the Aggie Invitational on Oct. 4. Sophomore Ashot Khacharyan beat Stanford’s Jamin Ball (6-1, 2-1 – injury withdrawl) and Sacramento State’s Niranjan Ram (6-4, 6-2). Khacharyan then lost in three sets (3-6, 6-4, 3-6) to Cal’s Mads Engsted. Sam Bertram beat Sacramento State’s Ayman Abdulwahab (6-4, 6-3) and St. Mary’s Mathias Olsen (6-2, 6-3) before losing in two sets (6-1, 6-3) to UC Davis’ Parker Kelly. Santa Clara participates in the Battle in the Bay Classic in San Francisco on Oct. 11.
Santa Clara University Women’s Tennis Gets to Second Round
SCU senior Katie Le fell in the second round of the ITA All-American Championships Qualifying Singles Draw on Oct. 1. Le beat Virginia’s Stephani Nauta (6-2, 6-3) before losing in two sets (6-1, 6-1) to UCLA’s Chanelle Van Nguyen. The Broncos play in the Saint Mary’s Invitational Oct. 11-13.
