Santa Clara Woman’s Club Awards Two Nursing Scholarships, Historic First

Much has changed since 1980, but one that hasn’t is the critical need for professional nursing skills. That’s why the Santa Clara Woman’s Club’s (santaclarawomansclub.org) annual Mary S. Taylor-Ruth N. Frey nursing scholarship is as important as ever. Started in memory of club member Mary S. Taylor, and first chaired by Ruth Frey, the program has been awarding annual scholarships since 1980.

This year for the first time in the century-old club’s history, it has awarded two $1,000 scholarships. This year’s winners are Santa Clara High School graduate and San Jose State student Sheena Castillo, and Santa Clara University psychology graduate Guadalupe Escobar, who is currently enrolled in DeAnza College’s nursing program.

“Both these young women were truly outstanding, with positive attitudes, a clear idea of their career path, good grades and both work part-time,” said Woman’s Club Past President Nancy Jo Banko.
