Santa Clara Student Summer Break Guide

Now that students are on summer break, it’s time to fill the free days with more than video games and flocking to the air-conditioned mall.

A trip to the Warburton Pool is perfect for beating the heat and getting in some exercise. Located at 2250 Royal Drive, Warburton Pool is open for recreation swim on Sundays and Saturdays. There is a fee of $4 for youth residents, $5 for youth non-residents, $6 for adult residents, and $7 for adult non-residents. There is also a Family Swim Pass available for purchase.

The City has a handful of pools to take advantage of. For a list and more information visit santaclaraca.gov/government/departments/parks-recreation/swimming-programs.

Getting the whole family signed up for the Library’s Summer Reading Program is the perfect way to work students’ brains while school is out. Children, teens and adults can all participate and it also gives a great air-conditioned alternative to the mall — the library.

There are also other library events and programs for all ages to participate in. Check out their calendar for your next trip to the library.

Illusive Comics & Games in Franklin Mall hosts art classes for different age groups. Check their website — www.illusivecomics.com — for dates, details and pricing.

Their sister store on El Camino, Isle of Gamers, has summer camps that tailor to different interests. Registration is open and you can find more details on their website: www.isleofgamers.com/summer-camp.html

At Montage Dance Productions, dancers can learn what it’s like to be in a music video. They perform and learn what it takes to be a backup dancer. At the end of the week they will have an exclusive showing of the video for family and friends. Rising stars can register online at www.MontageDanceProductions.com.

The City of Santa Clara Volunteer Services Program offers opportunities to give back to the community. This program is for community members 14 years old and up. Learn more here: santaclaraca.gov/Home/Components/News/News/36772/ or contact Gina Saporito with questions at 408-615-2249 or gsaporito@santaclaraca.gov.

Lucky for students, Santa Clara has a couple of options for college tours — a classic summer activity for students with an eye on the future. Both Santa Clara University — a four-year private university — and Mission College — a public community college — offer tours over the summer. Visit www.missioncollege.edu/student_services/welcome_center/tours.html for Mission College and www.scu.edu/admission/undergraduate/visits-events/ for SCU.

There is also the Youth Activity Center or Teen Center to hang out at and Parks and Recreation classes to fill the long summer days. Check out the City’s activity guide for more ideas: santaclaraca.gov/home/showdocument?id=56433

And of course, events like the Art & Wine Festival, National Night Out, and more are also coming this summer to keep summer breaking students busy.
