Strong-Arm Robbery

Location: 2400 Block of Agnew Road

At approximately 2214 hours, Public Safety Dispatchers began receiving calls regarding a shooting inside California’s Great America Theme Park. A large contingent of police officers were already working on overtime in the theme park for The Haunt, however additional police officers and the Santa Clara Fire Department were deployed.

A strong-arm robbery had occurred, a fight ensued, and someone screamed there was an active shooter. Immediately, unconfirmed reports of an active shooter flooded social media. Meanwhile, 200+ calls for service were fielded by Public Safety Dispatchers in relation to this incident.

Meanwhile, thousands of guests began a mass exodus screaming that there was an active shooter.

Through SCPD investigation, it was determined the robbery victim was not a victim of a gunshot wound, a person with a gun was not located and there was no evidence of shots fired. The strong-arm robbery victim had minor injuries and approximately $420 of personal property was stolen.

In this situation, social media was the conduit for misinformation and unnecessarily drained Police and Fire Department resources.

SCPD asks our community members to remain aware of their surroundings. If You See Something, Say Something! Reporting suspicious activity, circumstances or individuals can prevent a crime, minimize victimization, save a life and improve the overall quality of life. Call 9-1-1 in an emergency, or (408)615-5580 for non-emergency situations. Please do not report crimes on social media; it is not monitored regularly. For police, fire or medical resources, call Public Safety Dispatchers as they work 24/7, 365 and can deploy resources accordingly.

NOTE: An officer attended the “Trunk or Treat” at Bethel Church. Pastor Wright and the congregation were appreciative of SCPD’s attendance.
