NOTE:  With summer on the horizon, don’t get lax!  Review these school zone safety tips and protect pedestrian and bicyclists on their way to and from school.

  • Reduce your speed when travelling through school zones, residential areas, parks and playgrounds. Standard traffic rules for school zones are 25mph within 500-1,000 of a school when children are present
  • Expect increased vehicular traffic in and around school zones
  • Expect the unexpected – car door swinging open, bicyclist riding against traffic or not in bicycle lane, children darting into the street, etc.
  • Be aware of an unusually high concentration of pedestrian crosswalks around schools
  • Be on the lookout for buses and be sure to stop and remain stopped in both direction of travel when their red lights are flashing, and/or the stop sign is deployed
  • Obey crossing guards
  • Follow all California Vehicle Code regulations. The Vehicle Code is available at http://leginfo.legislature.ca.gov/faces/codesTOCSelected.xhtml?tocCode=VEH&tocTitle=+Vehicle+Code+-+VEH
  • Reminder – California carries higher fines for traffic violations in school zones

Nothing is more precious than the life of a child. Slow down, pay attention and ensure the safety of students as they travel to and from school.
