The Police Blotter highlights a partial list of incidents in the city and is distributed on a weekly basis. The Blotter provides the date, time, approximate location, a narrative summary of the incident, case number and the most serious arrest charge.
Meanwhile, the Arrest Log provides a timely, chronological summary of all the arrests made by the Santa Clara Police Department. It includes the name of the suspect(s), date of birth, city in which they reside, arrest date, time, location, case number as well as all the charge(s) associated with the arrest. This information, located on the Santa Clara Police Department’s home page (www.scpd.org), is updated daily and serves as the most comprehensive list of arrests made.

Grand Theft
Location: 2000 Block of El Camino Real
A Loss Prevention Specialist at a store on the 2000 block of El Camino Real heard the emergency exit door alarm sound from the rear of the store.
Through investigation, it was determined two male subjects entered the store, took several items and fled out the rear emergency exit, failing to pay for the items. The approximate value of the items is $2,744.19. The subjects are unknown and at large.

Drug Possession
Location: 3300 Block of El Camino Real
An officer observed a vehicle on the 3300 block of El Camino Real with an inoperable taillight. The officer initiated a traffic enforcement stop.
The officer contacted the male driver and female passenger. A Records check revealed the passenger was on searchable probation. Both subjects were asked to step out of the vehicle so a probation search of the vehicle could be conducted. The subjects complied.
A search of the vehicle yielded a controlled substance and drug paraphernalia. The male subject claimed ownership of the items. He was cited and released at the scene.

Suspicious Circumstances
Location: 2000 Block of Sahara Way
Public Safety Dispatchers received a call for service regarding damaged mailboxes at an apartment complex.
An officer arrived and met with the reporting party. Six mailboxes were removed from their normal position and were on the ground. The officer was unable to determine if any mail was stolen. A report was taken to document the suspicious circumstance. No suspect information is available.

Location: 2900 Block of Bowers Avenue
An officer observed a motorcycle traveling on southbound Bowers Avenue with expired registration. The officer initiated a traffic enforcement stop.
The officer contacted the male driver and female passenger. A Records check revealed the driver had a misdemeanor warrant for his arrest. The subject was arrested and released with a Notice to Appear.

Burglary Attempt
Location: 1900 Block of Halford Avenue
Public Safety Dispatchers received a call for service regarding a burglary attempt in progress.
Upon arrival, officers learned the victim’s car was parked on the 1900 block of Halford Avenue. A witness observed a male subject seated in the front passenger seat of the victim’s vehicle. The witness yelled at the subject and the subject fled in an eastbound direction in the parking lot. The witness attempted to chase after the subject, but he could not catch him.
There were no signs of forced entry into the vehicle and the victim stated that nothing appeared to be missing from the vehicle.

Location: Scott Boulevard and Octavius
An officer observed a vehicle traveling westbound on Scott Boulevard near San Tomas Expressway. A Records check on the vehicle’s registration revealed it expired in 2018, however the vehicle displayed a 2020 registration tab. The officer initiated a traffic enforcement stop.
Upon contact, the male subject admitted to placing a false 2020 registration tab on the vehicle. A Records check revealed the subject had a suspended driver’s license but was allowed to operate a vehicle for employment purposes. In addition, he had a misdemeanor warrant. He was arrested, issued a Notice to Appear and released from the scene.

The Police Department initiated a public education campaign to the Santa Clara community about the laws governing fireworks on June 22. A total of 19 fireworks related messages were distributed on Facebook and Twitter; a fewer number of messages were communicated on the website, eNotify and Nextdoor. The messaging emphasized the following: inherent dangers to property and bystanders, inconsiderate to neighbors, scares children and pets, raises anxiety levels for individuals with Post Traumatic Stress Disorder, unnecessarily ties up emergency phone lines. In addition, messaging stressed the importance of including a specific location of where the sale or discharge of fireworks is occurring when reporting such illegal activity.
From June 28 – July 4, the Police and Fire Departments worked collaboratively to conduct preventative roving patrols based on fireworks related call activity with existing personnel on duty. When public safety personnel were able to pinpoint where the fireworks were coming from, they contacted the individual/group with an emphasis on education.
The Police Department had four supplemental police officers on July 3, and eight on July 4 to address fireworks related calls for service. In addition, Fire Department personnel roved throughout Santa Clara neighborhoods throughout the evening. Despite these efforts, fireworks were discharged into the early morning hours on both days.
On July 4, four Public Safety Dispatchers coordinated intake and radio communications for 418 events; an increase from 312 calls for service in 2019. Of those calls, 164 were fireworks related and came into the Communications Center between 1700 hours and 0200 hours. During the same timeframe, officers conducted 68 proactive area checks and contacted multiple residents reporting the illegal activity.
The Police and Fire Departments responded to every firework related call in a marked patrol vehicle or unmarked police car, prioritizing their response to ensure the public’s safety, but did not have the ability to contact every reporting party due to the call volume. There were no reported fires or fireworks related injuries.
