NOTE: The lazy days of summer are here! Whether you are in your backyard pool or a public facility, take the following precautions with your water-loving kids:

  • Sign your kids up for swim lessons
  • Parents, caregivers and pool owners should learn CPR
  • Know how to get emergency help (e.g. access to a phone to call 9-1-1, poolside life preserver, available lifeguard, etc.)
  • Assign a water watcher. This person should:
    • not be under the influence of drugs or alcohol
    • put down his or her cell phone
    • avoid other activities
    • supervise even if lifeguards are present
    • switch off with another adult for breaks
  • Blow-up water wings, toys, rafts, air mattresses and life jackets provide a false sense of security and should never be used as a substitute for learning how to swim and adult supervision
