Santa Clara Police Report: January 17 – 23

The Police Blotter highlights a partial list of incidents in the city and is distributed on a weekly basis. The Blotter provides the date, time, approximate location, a narrative summary of the incident, case number and the most serious arrest charge.

Meanwhile, the Arrest Log provides a timely, chronological summary of all the arrests made by the Santa Clara Police Department. It includes the name of the suspect(s), date of birth, city in which they reside, arrest date, time, location, case number as well as all the charge(s) associated with the arrest. This information, located on the Santa Clara Police Department’s home page (www.scpd.org), is updated daily and serves as the most comprehensive list of arrests made.


Based on the mandatory orders from Santa Clara County Public Health, the City of Santa Clara has implemented many service level changes, limited to essential services. Since the preparation and distribution of a Police Blotter is not an essential service, it will be produced as resources are available.

Driving Under the Influence

Location: Chapman Court and The Alameda

Public Safety Dispatchers received a call for service regarding a rollover collision in the area of Chapman Court and The Alameda. The reporting party also referenced parked cars and nearby property damaged as a result of the collision.

An officer contacted the male subject sitting on the curb who identified himself as the driver. A Records check revealed the subject had a suspended driver’s license. The subject disclosed he did not have insurance.

The subject displayed objective symptoms of alcohol intoxication and admitted to consuming alcohol prior to driving. Due to injuries sustained in the collision, the subject was unable to perform the Standardized Field Sobriety Tests. Instead, he was evaluated by the Santa Clara Fire Department and transported to a local hospital. Due to injuries that required care at the hospital, he was arrested and issued a Notice to Appear.

Theft from a Vehicle

Location: 2400 Block of Lafayette Street

Between 2000 hours on 1/16/21 and 1445 hours on 1/18/21, an unknown subject(s) forced entry into a victim’s vehicle parked on the 2400 block of Lafayette Street and stole approximately $3,000 in electronics. The subject(s) is unknown and at large.

Felony Evade

Location: Cabrillo Avenue and Hoover Drive

An officer observed a vehicle traveling slowly through a neighborhood near Cabrillo Avenue and Hoover Drive occupied by two male subjects. Given the hour and the fact that the vehicle was full of construction equipment, commonly stolen during burglaries, this peaked the officer’s interest.

A DMV database check revealed the vehicle was stolen out of San Jose. While following the vehicle to allow additional officers to arrive before initiating a high-risk traffic enforcement stop, the vehicle continued onto southbound highway 101. With support nearby, the officer activated the patrol vehicle’s overhead lights and sirens. The vehicle fled the area and was pursued to the area of Santa Clara Street and 17th Street in San Jose where it was lost. Members of SCPD unsuccessfully combed the area for the vehicle and/or subjects.

The San Jose Police Department recovered the unoccupied vehicle at approximately 0045 hours. The subjects remain unknown and at large.

Theft from a Vehicle

Location: 1500 Block of Los Padres Boulevard

Between 1500 and 1530hrs, an unknown subject(s) shattered the front passenger window of the victim’s vehicle parked at a business on the 1500 block of Los Padres Boulevard.

The subject took a money bag containing approximately $5,000 in cash and miscellaneous. checks. The subject(s) is unknown and at large.

Grand Theft

Location: 3400 Block of Bonita Avenue

A resident on the 3400 block of Bonita Avenue heard a loud noise and exited the residence.

The victim observed a vehicle parking in their driveway and two individuals had raised the victim’s vehicle with a jack. The subject’s fled with the catalytic converter from the victim’s vehicle.

The subjects are unknown and at large.

Loud Party

Location: 500 Block of Washington Street

Public Safety Dispatchers received a call for service on the 500 block of Washington Street.

On arrival, there were approximately 10 individuals inside the residence and an estimated 100 individuals in the backyard. Loud voices could be heard, and alcohol was present on the premises; minors were not in possession of alcohol.

Party hosts had been drinking alcoholic beverages and were cooperative to law enforcement contact. The party was shut down while officers were present, and a second response card was provided.

Loud Party

Location: 900 Bellomy Street

Public Safety Dispatchers received a call for service on the 900 block of Bellomy Street.

On arrival, there were an unknown number of people inside and approximately 100 individuals outside the residence. Amplified music was being played and alcohol was present; it is unknown if minors were in possession of alcohol.

Party hosts had not been drinking alcoholic beverages and were cooperative to law enforcement contact. The party was not shut down while officers were present due to the need to respond to other emergency calls for service.

It should be noted, the Office of Student Life is responding to reports of student misconduct from the SCU community, residents and the Police Department from this past weekend. Meanwhile, the Police Department staff’s extra police officers on weekends where party activity is predicted. These officers handle all calls related to party complaints in the Santa Clara University footprint. The primary focus of the officers is disturbance calls disrupting the peace of the neighborhood, amplified music and loud and unreasonable noise after 10 p.m.

Officers responding to any type of complaint complete a “First Response” notice. The first, or subsequent, response documents the facts related to the party complaint and identifies the resident(s) hosting the party. These reports are forwarded to the Community Response Team (CRT) who conducts an analysis of each first response. This analysis considers previous calls for service at the address, the size of the party, whether underage drinking was occurring, and other factors related to the City Code. CRT then issues citations to the property owner and/or property management company as the responsible party. The penalty amount for a first response is $500 and are graduated up to $1,000 per response if five or more occurrences take place within one year.

This past weekend, the Police Department issued 12 first responses. Following an analysis of the first responses, CRT issued eight citations totaling over $4,000 in fines.
