NOTE: If you are a victim of a package theft, take these steps:

  • Use your confirmation email to track the package (due to the holidays, it may be delayed)
  • Check with your neighbors, it may have been misdelivered or a neighbor is holding it for you
  • Contact the seller/retailer
  • File on online Police Report at scpd.org
  • File a claim with the shipping company
  • Check your credit card company for purchase protection features
  • Claim high-value items with your homeowner’s insurance

Experiencing package theft is frustrating, and the claims process can be even worse. Protect yourself – try these strategies:

  • Increase your home security. Install a security camera – it may make a thief less likely to come onto your doorstep
  • Customize your delivery and consider insuring your packages. Track your packages with email or text alerts and/or provide delivery instructions (e.g. place package on back porch)
  • Have packages delivered to a human (e.g. your office, a trusted neighbor, etc.)
  • Consider an alternate delivery option (e.g. Amazon locker, UPS access point, FedEx office, Post Office box, in-store pick-up, etc.)

NOTE: Garage door opener remote controls are incredibly useful for homeowners and can make life a little easier, however, when they fall into the wrong hands, they can put your family at risk.

  • Do not leave your garage remote in your car. Instead, consider a key fob remote that can be attached to your key ring, program your car to your garage door opener or program with an app
  • Keep your garage doors (side and main) closed and locked
  • Always lock the door that separates your garage to your house; if you do not have a lock, install one
  • Consider a peephole in the door that separates your garage from your house
  • Frost garage door windows, or install another barrier to see inside such as blinds
  • Install motion detector lights around the perimeter of your home
  • When leaving for vacation, turn off your keypad, secure the emergency release or slide the deadlock into position
