Update: Santa Clara police say a three-year-old boy was the victim in the City’s second homicide of the year. According to an updated police report, a woman called to say her live-in boyfriend shot her son.

When officers arrived at the home, they tried to perform CPR on the young boy but were unsuccessful. Officers arrested 24-year-old Sergio Colin Gomez after a brief struggle. Gomez was taken to the hospital for treatment of minor injuries.

Police say the three-year-old was not related to Gomez. Investigators found a handgun at the scene.

Santa Clara police are investigating the City’s second homicide of 2024. Officers were called to a home on Poinciana Drive just before 2:30 a.m. on Feb. 20.

The home is located just across Lawrence Expressway from Cabrillo Avenue. According to KRON 4, the homicide happened inside one of the apartments at the Riley Square Apartments.

Police said when officers arrived on the scene, they “detained a male suspect near the residence.” They went inside the residence, and that’s when officers discovered the body of a shooting victim. Police arrested the man found near the residence and said there was no threat to public safety.

Officers say this is still an open and active investigation. The Weekly will continue to follow this story and update it as more information come into the newsroom.
