Santa Clara Fire Department Lights a Fire for the Next Generation

Standing on the tailboard as tailboard firefighters used to be called is Santa Clara resident, Garv (8). Garv had already reached up and started to bring down one of the hoses while Fire Chief William Kelly got the nozzle ready. Here they connect the nozzle to the hose and Chief Kelly explains how it’s done on Saturday, Oct. 6 at the City of Santa Clara Fire Department’s Annual Open House at Fire Station #2. A total of eight fire stations were open for tours during the event that kicked off Fire Prevention Week in Santa Clara. During the four-hour event, people attending the open house at Fire Station #2 could wander through the fire tower where firefighters hone their firefighting and rescue skills and get up-close looks at a variety of engines and trucks used by the department. They could also watch a demonstration of how firefighters can extricate a person trapped in a vehicle. The other Fire Stations that were open for tours had demonstrations of CPR and of some of the equipment used by firefighters in their jobs.
