Santa Clara County’s First Novel Coronavirus Case Has Recovered

The County of Santa Clara Public Health Department announced today that the first confirmed case of novel coronavirus in Santa Clara County has fully recovered and has been released from isolation. According to the statement, he was never sick enough to be hospitalized and he was isolated at home and was monitored by public health staff for the duration of his isolation.

The Public Health Department continues to work closely with healthcare providers, hospitals, and its partners to address novel coronavirus. Currently, there is no evidence that novel coronavirus is circulating in Santa Clara County and risk remains low.

Last week, the Santa Clara County Board of Supervisors did vote to declare a state of emergency, which ensured that health officials would be prepared in case the novel coronavirus showed signs of spreading through the community. In January, the County of Santa Clara Public Health Department activated its Emergency Operations Center.

So far, two novel coronavirus cases have been identified by County Health officials. This first case, which has now recovered, was reported on Jan. 31 involved a local man who traveled to Wuhan, China and then flew to San Jose International Airport on Jan. 24. After his trip, he went directly home and only left his home twice to seek medical care. As reported, the man was never sick enough to be hospitalized and is isolated at home with a few household members.

A second case that was identified on Feb. 2, involved a woman who traveled to Santa Clara County to visit her family. She arrived from Wuhan, China on Jan. 23 and reportedly did not leave her family’s home except to seek outpatient medical care twice. She was also not sick enough to be hospitalized — she and her family were also isolated at home. There is currently no update on her health status.
