The best way to attract a “smash and grab” thief is to create an easy target — cars with items visible to a thief. To avoid being a victim, make your vehicle less appealing.
- Never leave valuables in sight (e.g. GPS device, laptop, cell phones, wallet/purse, backpack, keys, garage door opener, etc.)
- Park in a well-lit area with lots of vehicle and pedestrian traffic
- Never leave your car running, especially while it is unattended or unlocked
- Roll up your windows, close your sunroof and lock your doors
- Install an audible alarm (and, activate it), visible anti-theft device, subscribe to a service that provides a vehicle immobilizer system and/or consider installing a GPS tracking system
- Carry the registration and insurance card with you. Don’t leave personal identification documents or credit cards in your vehicle
- Report suspicious activity by calling 408-615-5580, or 9-1-1 in an emergency
