Fraud – Felony

Location: 2700 Block of Taft Avenue
A victim came to the Police Building to report a loss of $2,150. The victim entered into an agreement with a suspect through CraigsList to rent a home in South Lake Tahoe in late-July. On 4/11/17, the victim paid a security deposit via PayPal. Approximately one week later, the victim received a phone call from the suspect requesting a loan for $500 to conduct some electrical work at the property before the victim’s arrival. The suspect said he would refund the security deposit, plus the loan, following the rental period.

The victim became suspicious and learned the property was actually owned by someone else who was advertising its rental on VRBO. The victim contacted the owner and made them aware of the situation. Unfortunately, the vacation home had already been rented for the prearranged timeframe.
