According to the reporting party, the 24- year-old male subject had cut himself in the chest with a knife, was armed with a handgun and had barricaded himself in his bedroom.
Upon arrival, officers learned the subject had fled out a bedroom window. Responding officers located the subject along a retaining wall adjacent to the railroad tracks. When located by officers, he made threats to shoot officers and himself. After repeated attempts to get the subject to show his hands, he refused. The subject advanced towards Officer Colin Stewart, a 13-year law enforcement veteran. In fear for his safety, he fired his service weapon.
Despite lifesaving efforts, the subject was pronounced deceased at the scene. No weapon was found in the immediate vicinity of the subject. A bloody knife was found along the path the subject was running. The involved officer was wearing a body- camera during the incident.
In line with the County’s updated Officer-Involved Shooting protocol, this investigation is being conducted jointly by detectives from the Santa Clara Police Department and investigators from the Santa Clara County District Attorney’s Office.
