New High-rise Condo Complex on Its Way to Santa Clara

The Santa Clara City Council approved a plan for a new condominium complex on Lafayette Street that will stretch up to 21-stories high.

A new massive high-rise condo complex is coming to Santa Clara.

Tuesday night, the Santa Clara City Council unanimously approved a 21-story condominium complex. At its most recent meeting, Council gave the green light to a 198-condo complex located at 5185 Lafayette St.

The complex is part of the Tasman East Specific Plan. The .9-acre parcel lies on the northeast corner of Lafayette Street and Calle Del Luna. The land to the north and east are designated light industrial, while those to the north and south are entitled for high-rise development.

The development will host studio, one-, two- and three-bedroom condos, said Reena Brilliot, interim community development director. In addition to 310 parking spaces, the project will boast 3,000 sq. ft. of ground-floor retail space, a gym and community pool.

Brilliot said the project is consistent with the general plan. The Planning Commission and the Architectural Review Committee both recommended approving the project.

The Planning Commission’s recommendation came with a contingency to emphasize local union labor for the project, something the Council saw fit to include as part of its approval. During the Planning Commission discussion on the issue in December, it was brought up that an emphasis on the use of local union labor should be a policy the City considers. This was not a key point of discussion on this project.

The Council approved the high-rise condo complex proposal in a unanimous vote.

Council Consent Calendar Spending

A $1.25 million contract with Statewide Traffic Safety and Signs for traffic control services.

The next regularly scheduled meeting is Tuesday, Feb. 27 in the Council Chambers at City Hall, 1500 Warburton Ave. in Santa Clara.

No more condos that land can flood. To crowded. I've been here 62 years this will up the crime we don't need. It's will take away community.

Expect a deluge of comments from NIMBYs. I see one complaining about crime. Others will complain about traffic, schools, density, changing the character of the neighborhood (aka too many non-white people) etc

The world is changing, people. Get used to it.
