Mission College Men’s Soccer Coach and Players Honored

Mission College’s Men’s Soccer Coach, Jose Almeida, was recently named the COA Coast Conference Coach of the Year. The Coast Conference is made up of 17 community colleges in the greater San Francisco Bay Area. With this award came the opportunity for Almeida to travel to the college in Southern California to coach the Northern California Showcase Men’s Soccer Team, made up of the top community college male soccer players from across the state. Joining Almeida as a member of the showcase team will be Mission College player Aximandro Garcia, who plays the defender role on Mission’s Men’s Soccer team, and who came to Mission From Gunderson High School.

“I am excited and proud to have this opportunity to represent Mission College Men’s Soccer at the California Community Soccer Showcase and bring recognition and attention to our soccer program,” said Almeida.

Two additional award nominations for the Mission College Men’s Soccer Team were presented at the same time. Rafael Alvarez, from Blue Ridge High School was nominated for the Best defender, while Jose E. Franco, who came to Mission from Gunderson High School, received a nomination for the best mid-fielder.

“It’s wonderful when students cannot only participate in a team sport, but it’s even better when a coach can be a mentor and role model as well. Athletics teaches us many life lessons as well as helping students to stay motivated in their academics. Mission College is proud of their athletic teams and we celebrate when our student athletes and coaches are recognized for excellence,” said Dr. Laurel Jones, Mission College President.
