Retaliatory my foot – Letter to the Editor

Our 47th President recently said proposed tariffs on Canada and Mexico are “retaliatory” for them allowing illegals and fentanyl to come across their borders into America. Folks, this stated reason lags far behind the real reason for the President’s unilateral tariff decree. The actual, well understood historical reason for tariffs is to protect domestic industries from foreign competition and thereby provide increased revenue and profits for them. You can be sure that with concurrent administration efforts to slow or kill the operation of unions here, the working class that put Trump into office will not be sharing in the new profits. Most MAGA initiatives, including the President’s recent cray cray statement about turning Gaza into an American real estate bonanza, have to do with injecting more money into the billionaire class. Wake up little Suzy and stop believing everything your hero the President says.
