Recently, I learned there is a firefighter shortage, and many volunteers are high school graduates and college students.
I have a proposal: counties in California could partner with their respective local high schools and colleges to offer firefighting programs.
Firefighters, especially those involved in wildfire fighting, must understand fire ecology to effectively manage and mitigate fires while protecting ecosystems. Offering firefighting courses or summer camps could create a win-win situation. Many students struggle to find meaningful activities during the summer. By participating in such programs, they could not only develop hands-on firefighting skills but also gain valuable knowledge in areas like fire ecology, soil erosion, water quality, and post-fire wildlife habitats.
If colleges like Stanford can offer Taylor Swift-inspired classes, then it’s time to introduce firefighting courses, a critical initiative that could make fire awareness, prevention, and preparedness a part of everyday life in California.
