Our Community Garden Took a Village – Letter to the Editor

Weeding at the Municipal Rose Garden was a perfect volunteering opportunity. Recently, my sister and I went there to help with the preparation of an upcoming event. Specifically, we removed the weeds.

As the roses were blooming, I noticed that the weeds were also flourishing, which means we had a lot of work to do. At first, my sister and I used two little hoe and fork combos to remove the weeds. However, we found that they were not effective. Then, we changed our tool to a big gardening hoe, which was much faster. My sister dug out the roots of the weeds, while I picked them out and threw them into the giant trash can.

Through this experience, I learned that the colorful and thriving roses must be maintained. It takes lots of people and lots of work behind a beautiful community garden.
