The idea the Santa Clara City Council should be elected by district rather than at large is racism disguised as political correctness. To vote for a candidate simply because you identify with their ethnicity, gender, religion or sexual orientation may deny you the opportunity to vote for the candidate who is most qualified. How unfair it is, without any evidence, to assume because a political representative isn’t the same ethnic background as the community they serve, somehow they don’t represent everyone equally.
Today’s politicians are pressured into playing identity politics by an overwhelming number of special interest groups thus, polarizing their functionality as they pander for votes. The last thing we need is more pitting of one group against another. We should be voting based on a candidate’s qualifications not “who they are”.
