I totally agree with Nick Dellaporta’s assertion (S.C. Weekly, Wed., 09-18-13) that funding for schools, public safety, healthcare and other municipal services are a top priority. I just don’t think he is looking at the big picture when it comes to using a portion of our RDA funds to help finance the new 49er stadium. While police services and schools provide us with safe neighborhoods and an educated citizenry there really isn’t a direct return of dollars spent, coming back into the city coffers.
The stadium, on the other hand, will provide jobs, generate customers for local hotels, restaurants and other retail businesses. The result will be a plethora of taxes being collected for years to come that will assist in providing for police, fire services, schools, etc…Sounds like a good investment to me!
