The Dec 12th article “Lobbying for More Campaign Disclosure” illustrated that not all the monies spent on recent election material was disclosed. However, the article didn’t mention the expenditures on behalf of some of the City Council Candidates that had great union support. To their credit, all these candidates did sign the spending limit agreement. However, the funds from the unions were not part of this expenditure limitation (after all, it wasn’t the candidates money). But, it sure flooded our mail boxes with campaign literature. It becomes difficult to have a ‘fair fight’ when there are giants funding campaign advertising. But, I can agree that is a legitimate campaign strategy. In the future, I suppose candidates should court the unions for their endorsements so that union money can fund the media blitz to increase the odds of that candidate winning an election.
