From the Bleachers

The Santa Clara High School football team ended their regular season at home with a 40-10 win over Los Altos on Nov 13. With the win, the Bruins end the conference leading their league with a perfect 6-0 record.

The Bruins got things started halfway through the first quarter on a pass from sophomore quarterback Chris Brown to junior Pako Vehikite for the first touchdown. Before the end of the quarter, Los Altos countered with a two-yard carry of its own and also completed the extra point to lead 7-6.

Getting into a tough position, Brown found Vehikite again, completing a 45-yard touchdown pass on second and 25. Junior Gabriel Willis kicked the extra point successfully to take the lead from the Eagles.

After a Los Altos field goal to bring down Santa Clara’s lead to three, the Bruins ran a kickoff into the end zone; but the call was reversed due to an illegal block in the back. A nine yard run and a successful two-point conversion by senior Andrew Del Rosario in the same drive brought Santa Clara up 21-10 going into halftime.

To start the third quarter, Brown threw a pass to senior Marquise Shields for a 70-yard touchdown. An extra point by Willis increased the lead to 28-10. The last score of the third quarter was on a two-yard run by Del Rosario, but an incomplete extra point only added six points.

The Bruins would score once more in the fourth quarter; Del Rosario carried the ball into the end zone on a 55-yard run.

Brown ended the game with 17 complete passes on 20 attempts and a total of 252 yards with only nine of those rushing. Del Rosario completed a team high of three touchdowns, all rushing, while Vehikite and Shields supplied the three passing touchdowns.

Senior wide receiver Darius Jones-Dorsey ended the game with a total of 40 yards, while senior Erick Arevalo had 28 receiving yards. Willis completed two of the four extra points attempted.

Santa Clara starts off playoffs against North Salinas on Nov. 20 at 5 p.m. The game will be played at a neutral site, Salinas Sports Complex.
