Sunnyvale police have arrested a fourth minor in connection with a shooting that killed a local man earlier this year.
Just after midnight on April 30, police arrived at the 100 block of South Bernardo Avenue after someone called 911 reporting gunshots. Inside a vehicle at the scene, police discovered a 19-year-old man who had been shot. The victim later died from his injuries at the hospital.
The next day, police arrested a juvenile in connection with the murder. By June 11, police had arrested two more minors. Then, police arrested a fourth suspect on June 24.
Capt. Dzanh Le, with Sunnyvale Department of Public Safety, said he was unaware whether police will make more arrests in connection with the shooting. He said it was “too premature to speculate” on the motive for the crime.
Le would not detail how many of the teens were armed or how many shots the victim suffered, only saying “several” were fired.
“When you are talking about a homicide, a murder, when it is intentional, regardless if you are the person that pulled the trigger, you are a knowing participant,” Le said. “Each individual did play an active role.”
The fourth teen arrested had fled to San Diego. Le said he is “pretty certain that he fled to evade police.” Working with police in San Diego, Le said local police were able to pick the juvenile up on the warrant in connection to the shooting.
All four suspects are being held at Santa Clara County Juvenile Hall. Le said once police are certain there will be no more arrests, and once the district attorney charges all those involved, police will release more information on the shooting.
