City Attorney Resigns, Accepts New Position with Private Law Firm

Santa Clara City Attorney Richard Nosky announced on Dec. 30, 2016 that he has accepted a position with San José law firm Berliner Cohen and will leave his current post at the end of January.

“I’m grateful for my experience in Santa Clara,” said Nosky. “I’ve made lasting relationships and been able to work on amazing projects. I want to thank everyone who helped me make that happen.”

“On behalf of the entire City Council, we thank Mr. Nosky for his years of service to our City,” said Mayor Lisa Gillmor in a press statement noting that Nosky’s experience guided the City’s negotiations during construction of Levi’s Stadium, hosting Super Bowl 50 and embarking on the largest development project in the City’s history, City Place Santa Clara. “We wish him the best in the next chapter of his career,” said Gillmor.

The City Council has scheduled an emergency closed session meeting on Jan. 10 at 5 p.m. to address filling the vacancy.

“Because of the many important issues facing the City,” said Vice Mayor Teresa O’Neill. “The Council is interested in expeditiously appointing an Interim City Attorney to ensure a smooth transition.”

Hired by Santa Clara in 2011, Nosky brought the City far-reaching expertise in stadium and arena development as well as California redevelopment and CEQA law. He previously served as City Attorney for the cities of Stockton and Salinas, Monterey County’s Chief Assistant Counsel, and has worked in private practice with Sacramento-based law firm Downey Brand and as a partner in the Abramson, Church & Stave in Salinas.

Nosky received both his B.A. and J.D. from the University of the Pacific.
