Assistance League of Los Altos Assisted Sunnyvale School District in Remote Learning & School Reopening Efforts

2020-2021 school year has been a unique and challenging one.

The Assistance League of Los Altos and Sunnyvale School District have collaborated in supporting local district’s virtual learning and school reopening efforts.

In August 2020, the League donated over 6,000 student supplies to ensure students have the materials they need for remote learning. These supplies included lap trays, lap desks, caddies, headphones, noise-canceling earphones, whiteboard & marker sets, sharpeners, and iPad cases. The League also donated Safeway and Grocery Outlet gift cards to families who fell on hard times before the holiday vacation.

This February, the League worked closely with five school principals to prepare for school reopening in March. The League donated a total of 900+ Spanish library books and classroom books in Read Across America and equity-focused topics.

“Because of the League’s generous donations, we were able to curate a fantastic and diverse Spanish library that will support students joining our new Juntos Spanish-English Dual-Immersion Program,” said Joseph Salazar, Librarian at Columbia Middle. “Your donation will allow us to get more books into kids’ hands and continue our work to foster a love of reading. Thank you again.”

In addition, hundreds of school supplies, reusable water bottles, sit spots and supplies used by the social workers during their counseling sessions such as child-size tables, weighted lap blankets, paint sets, coloring books, and kinetic sand were delivered. Students at CMS who participated in the Reading Intervention program and met/exceeded the program requirements received gift cards as awards from the League. Safeway and Grocery Outlet gift cards were donated to the families in need.

“Our members are delighted to see the district’s students continue to thrive and be excited to go back to school for in-person learning,” said Grace Pedersen, Vice President of Programs.  “This joint effort is a success story.”

“The League members appreciate the variety of programs that we support at SSD and we are excited to continue the journey together for many years to come,” added by Adele Hennig, Program Chair for the Sunnyvale School District at the League.

In February, the League donated another $20,000 worth of supplies just for reopening efforts.

“We want to thank our extended community — the Assistance League of Los Altos — for providing resources again to benefit our teachers, instruction, and students,” Karen Currie, Lakewood School’s instructional coach, wrote in the school’s recent staff update.

The Assistance League of Los Altos recently helped the school give away 55 books promoting diverse heroes and inclusive stories as part of the school’s March Read Across America week of Reading Challenges.
