Art in Action Sparks Creativity at Sutter School for Third Year

The Art in Action program at John D. Sutter Elementary School in Santa Clara continues for a third year to spark artistic creativity in each and every K – 5 student. It is funded by the PTA’s generous contribution of $6,000 and untold volunteer hours.

The third exhibition of student artwork opened on March 12, 6 – 7 p.m., transforming the school multi-purpose room into a museum gallery. Families admired the hundreds of paintings and sculptures created by their children. Throughout the week, teachers brought classes to view the artworks, modeled after masterpieces by famous artists.

“Opportunities like Art in Action create learning and excitement and love of going to school,” said Sutter Principal Michael Fong.

Art in Action (www.artinaction.org) is a nonprofit organization that designs sequential, age-appropriate student lessons that align with the National Visual Arts Standards. Schools pay an annual subscription fee per class for the online lessons. Parent volunteers teach the lessons, usually once a month.

“We’ve always had the love of art at Sutter,” said Fong. “There’s a rich tradition of having art integrated with other subjects.”

Other Santa Clara Unified School District elementary schools that subscribe to the Art in Action program are Briarwood, Central Park, Don Callejón, Haman, Kathryn Hughes and Westwood.
